We take actions to: conserve heat, conserve water, reduce oil/gas carbon emissions, compost waste food, recycle wherever possible, use bio degradable cleaning agents, use reclamation building materials, source food locally, offer local employment, instruct staff in green practices, include green room info packs, conserve/care for wildlife in our area, At Shamwari we constantly aim to improve the “Eco-tourism experience”. We continue on our mission “to conserve a vanishing way of life” by enlarging the reserve, as adjacent farms become available, thereby setting aside a larger area of land for conservation purposes. Shamwari’s most recent acquisition, 3000 hectares of pure wilderness area, is one way in which the reserve continues on its quest to ‘lead by example’. The Wilderness Foundation is based at Shamwari Game Reserve. Shamwari Game Reserve’s main objective is to create and maintain an Eco-tourism product in the Eastern Cape, which is sustainable on three fronts; Financially, Ecologically, and for the local population. Breeding Centre - this is set on a 3000 ha area where certain species can breed in the absence of predators, species such as the rare mountain zebra and the disease free buffalo. The Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre - this is a joint venture between the reserve and the Born Free Foundation, UK. The aims are to provide long term, humane care for rescued African Cats that cannot be returned to the wild. Anti poaching - a highly trained anti-poaching unit is in place to provide security for all the fauna and flora of Shamwari Game Reserve. Ecology - includes vegetation and animal monitoring, burning programmes and the co-ordination of all external academic projects.

Description

Stretching over 25 000 hectares of prime wildlife area, Shamwari Game Reserve is one of the largest private conservation initiatives in Southern Africa.

The reserve is situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River, halfway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, a pleasant drive from Cape Town, forming a natural extension to the famous Garden Route, in the malaria-free Eastern Cape Province.

With five of South Africa’s eight vegetation types, Shamwari is a sanctuary for a variety of game and birdlife. The abundance of game that roam free under the unrelenting Africa sun, takes one back to a forgotten era – a time of hunters and the hunted, where survival was the destiny of only the fittest.

Now, Shamwari, which means “my friend” in Shona, is where guests and wildlife live in harmony. It is about conserving a vanishing way of life and is the realisation of one man’s dream, and the success of many people’s passion.

At Shamwari we constantly aim to improve the “Eco-tourism experience”. We continue on our mission “to conserve a vanishing way of life” by enlarging the reserve, as adjacent farms become available, thereby setting aside a larger area of land for conservation purposes.

Shamwari’s most recent acquisition, 3000 hectares of pure wilderness area, is one way in which the reserve continues on its quest to ‘lead by example’. .

Shamwari Game Reserve won “Africa’s Leading Conservation Company” and “Africa’s Leading Safari Lodge” for its pioneering work in conservationat the World Travel Awards in Johannesburg, 2010.

Visit Shamwari Game Reserve and embark on the ultimate African adventure.
