Dear Lynne,
"I huffed and I puffed and I blew the airlines away!" said Nature. The
question I haven't seen answered - or, indeed, posed - yet, is which is
more damaging to the atmosphere? Ash? Or greenhouse gases? Or volcano
gases, come to that. I have a lurking suspicion that Nature may be
hastening Planet Earth on its way even more effectively than us puny
earthlings. *****
Meanwhile, GGW continues to grow apace: over 250 establishments have
joined since last I wrote. Many of the new Members have applied off
their own bat (organically, in Google-talk), i.e. they have not been
officially invited to join. Gradually our name and our mission is
spreading throughout the world environment-friendly community. REGISTER YOUR PROPERTY HERE***** AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO MEMBERS - please, please inform us of changes to your RATES, SPECIAL OFFERS and especially changes to your EMAIL CONTACT ADDRESS. We recommend that your contact email should not be person-specific. Suppose the person was away, or had left? An enquiry from a potential guest might languish in their inbox for days - or worse not be seen at all! The best contact, we think, is "info".

GREAT GREEN BEDTIME READS
Curl up with your favorite young environmentalists and one of these great green reads.
Peek into this diary of a plastic bottle as it goes on a journey from the refinery plant, to the manufacturing line, to the store shelf, to a garbage can, and finally to a recycling plant where it emerges into it's new life...as a fleece jacket!

When Dr. Seuss gets serious, you know it must be important. Published in 1971, and perhaps inspired by the "save our planet" mindset of the 1960s, The Lorax is an ecological warning that still rings true today amidst the dangers of clear-cutting, pollution, and disregard for the earth's environment.
The Tree R's describes the ways in which kids and their families can avoid waste and be environmentally conscious. Four pages presenting activities for children appear at the back of the book, followed by a two-page section for parents, with tips on explaining the subject in more detail.

DENIS HAYES INTERVIEW
When he was just in his mid-20s, Denis Hayes was made national coordinator of the very first Earth Day. That was forty years ago, and a lot has changed. Over his career as a lawyer, technologist, investor, and advocate, Hayes has watched Earth Day become a global phenomenon, aggregating the efforts of myriad causes in many places (occasionally co-opted by corporations). Hayes shares his thoughts on the current significance of Earth Day, Obama's weaknesses and strengths, the future of cleantech, and what real climate legislation should look like.

| UNDER THE HOOD : new developments on the website:
The advanced search
functionality has finally arrived. This means that users can now search
on any keyword contained in the database. Like 'wifi', or a type of
activity like
'skiing' or 'sailing'. Of
course, if you know the name of a property, state or town that you want
to find just type it in and the system will find it for you in a flash.
Another significant
addition
has been a map of the Member's location
A tab to access the map is positioned alongside the slideshow on every
page of the Directory. NOTE: very occasionally Google gets it
wrong. So, please, if you find they've positioned an Establishment in
the middle of Arkansas when it's really in Argentina, please email us the correct coordinates if
you know them - or
just let us know and we'll work it out for ourselves. And we'll put
things right.
If we only had some more money
we'd be able to expand the website's usability even faster.
Unfortunately, the work of adding to, or changing Websites is extremely
time-consuming, even for experts. We
need to be able to afford to employ staff to help our gallant team of
volunteers.We
have identified several directions we want to take.
- Appointment of small, specialised travel agents in the countries
where we are represented to organise green tours for those of our
Clients who require such services. Only agents whose eco-cred matches
that of our Members need apply, of course.
- Our next big project is a
booking management section. this will provide users with a better
enquiry system. It will enable us to keep
better track of enquiries and member bookings.
- Some countries have now
so many Registered Members that for ease of use it is becoming
necessary to sub-divide the Directory into states, provinces or country
areas.

| EARTH DAY 2010 : GREEN LODGING NEWS
"Earth Day (Thursday, April 22nd) is a time
to not only celebrate
our successes but to also acknowledge the mess we have made on our
planet. In some ways, things are getting better. U.S. greenhouse gas
emissions actually dropped by 2.9 percent from 2007 to 2008. And,
renewable energy sources now provide more than 10 percent of U.S.
electricity generation-good progress. Still, we rely too much on coal
for energy production (29 recent deaths in a West Virginia coal mine was
a grim reminder), far too many people lack access to clean water (more
than 800 million in the world), and the current global
species-extinction rate exceeds what ecologists consider the "natural"
rate by 100 times. Sobering statistics."
